Summary

Brief and perfectly formed, this quiet Belgian drama takes a singularly serene look at the experience of being a migrant worker in Europe. It follows three days in the life of Stefan (Stefan Gota), a construction worker living in Brussels, as he prepares to return to his native Romania for a break. During his visits to friends and family, Stefan encounters ShuXiu (Liyo Gong), a Chinese-Belgian scientist, and the two develop an understated connection. Writer/director Bas Devos gives his film an unusual structure that unfortunately only highlights the plot's relative slightness. But the scenes themselves are paced very nicely, with involving and subtle dialogue that's well performed by an authentic cast. Devos uses quietness and often beautiful photography to maintain a confidently restful tone, one that builds a curious emotional effect for the viewer.
