Viewers of a certain age will remember how Raquel Welch’s figure made her a source of dreary punchlines for 1970s comedians. Her image had been defined by the deerskin bikini she wore on the poster of One Million Years BC. But Welch, who died in 2023, had more strings to her bow. Previews weren’t available but this documentary by Olivia Cheng frames her as an underrated trailblazer, highlighting her Hispanic heritage. Welch’s father was from Bolivia, but her manager convinced her to use her married name.

We begin as the young Raquel Tejada arrives in Hollywood in 1963 as a single mother of two children, eager for acting work.
