Set in 19th-century France, but shot in Italy with an international cast, this black-and-white horror by American writer/director Warren Kiefer feels more than a little cobbled together. Its main point of interest is the participation of young English assistant director Michael Reeves, who would go on to make the 1968 classic Witchfinder General before sadly dying a year later. When a troupe of travelling actors led by Laura (Gaia Germani) and Eric (Philippe Leroy) are invited to perform for the mysterious Count Drago (Christopher Lee), they ignore the many signs telling them to turn around. The most memorable of these is an old crone (a heavily made-up Donald Sutherland, working hard for his first screen credit in multiple roles), who tells them, "Beware the castle of the living dead!" Viewers would do well to heed the warning, too. What follows is as creaky as an old portcullis, with a denouement so dull that staying awake may prove the biggest problem - even the reliable Lee looks a little sleepy.
