Having made his name with creature features, Bert I Gordon turned towards the family market with this piratical fantasy. Noted child actor Charles Herbert takes the title role of the Massachusetts day-dreamer who is transported on to the Queen's Revenge after a genie (Joe Turkel) in a washed-up bottle grants him a wish. Discovering he has three days to get home or be trapped in glass, Herbert has to use his smarts to convince Blackbeard (Murvyn Vye) about a stash of buried treasure. Despite being co-scripted by silent era veteran Lillie Hayward, the narrative is a tad predictable. But, shooting in colour for the first time, Gordon makes innovative use of the Perceptovision process used to combine travelling mattes and split screens into some splendid special effects. The performances are amusingly overblown, and Herbert holds his own alongside the director's daughter, Susan, who plays both the girl next door and a Dutch shipboard captive.
