David Parkinson

The 20th Dogme 95 outing is one of the sharpest to exploit the movement's radical, stripped-back film-making rules, known as the "Vow of Chastity". The movie explores both the shifting line between life and performance and the viewer's complicity in helping to define what dramatic "realism" actually is. Acting as his own interlocutor in this hand-held mockumentary, director Vincent Lannoo hones in on the controversial Open Door Theatre method that is dividing a prestigious Belgian drama school as it readies its next productions. Pierre Lekeux and Lionel Bourguet excel as the feuding tutors, but everyone is so in the slot that it's often easy to forget you're watching a spoof.
