Summary

Action thriller starring Keanu Reeves, Donnie Yen and Bill Skarsgård. After recovering from being shot by his mentor, ace assassin John Wick is out for revenge against the High Table. However, the Marquis is now in control of the organisation and sends a horde of killers after the beleaguered hitman - which will have bloody consequences for friend and foe alike.

Maximalism is a virtue in the fourth round of this hyper-stylised action series. This time, Keanu Reeves's eponymous ex-hitman strives to free himself of his obligations to the High Table, a global crime syndicate. But the Table's sadistic envoy (Bill Skarsgård) has other ideas, and he dispatches assassins to kill John Wick. The plot is blunter than a dropkick to the head, and faintly overburdened with franchise lore, but Chad Stahelski's vigorous direction gives it plenty of thrust. Musician Rina Sawayama is nimble in a brief cameo, while committed performances from Scott Adkins, Shamier Anderson and a dapper Donnie Yen give real character to all the pulverising violence. Reeves's natural warmth endears, too, and his physicality is as impressive as ever, especially as the action escalates - and keeps on escalating. At nearly three hours long, the film may exhaust non-fans, but Stahelski's inventive staging is worth the time. Energised by a swaggering electro-rock score, this is pulp cinema at its most giddy and gleeful.
