This surreal serial-killer horror thriller from Hardware director Richard Stanley is a landmark British film of the 1990s. Combining African tribal myths with spaghetti western folklore, this highly personal magical mystery tour through sweeping Namibian vistas has an embarrassment of cinematic riches. It's a hallucinogenic eye-popper, a political allegory - accent on the gory - that bursts with atmospheric moodiness. Robert Burke is a forbidding presence as "The Hitcher from Hell", spinning an illusory web of dream-like terror around his suicidal victims. Once seen, it's never forgotten.
