Summary
Detective adventure based on the classic comic strip, starring Warren Beatty, Madonna and Al Pacino. America in the 1930s, the home of heroes and villains. Bad guys like Big Boy Caprice, hunchback and underworld syndicate boss with plans for a city totally under his control. And heroes like Dick Tracy, the handsome detective with a fedora hat and a wristwatch radio, who has been close to catching Big Boy in the past, and is determined not to let him get away this time.

A strange yet successful departure for Warren Beatty, who nurtured this marvellous-looking rendition of the 1940s comic strip for several years and through many rewrites. Beatty takes the title role as the laconic and almost monosyllabic detective surrounded by villains of a more colourful hue, such as Al Pacino's Big Boy and William Forsythe's Flattop. The film was received with faint but reverential praise at the time because it was a great technical and ensemble achievement - even Madonna makes her mark as a sultry blonde bombshell - but Beatty fails to inject the enterprise with any great depth or warmth. Nevertheless, it still won three Oscars from seven nominations and stands as a near perfect example of how to bring florid characters off the drawn page and on to the moving screen.
