It's not essential to see Kill Boksoon (2023) before watching this spin-off, but it kind of helps. The first film establishes the role that the MK Ent company plays in South Korea's underground assassination business and the rules of engagement set by its boss, Cha Min-kyu (Sul Kyung-gu). Returning from vacation to find that his universe has been turned upside down by a killing spree, Mantis (Yim Si-wan) decides to set up a rival organisation. He enlists mentor Dok-go (Jo Woo-jin) and fellow MK Ent alumna, Jae-yi (Park Gyu-young). However, Mantis quickly discovers that neither can be trusted and a bloody battle for survival ensues. With Mantis's pincer-like sickle blades very much to the fore, the action sequences are slickly handled by director Lee Tae-sung. Yet, despite the return of Boksoon screenwriter Byun Sung-hyun, the characters are less well defined, while the tensions between them feel more prosaic. Consequently, this John Wick-alike is nowhere near as intricate or dramatically intriguing as its predecessor.
