James Mottram

Influential rock band Led Zeppelin gets its first official documentary in this pleasing take on the group's early years. Surviving members Jimmy Page, Robert Plant and John Paul Jones all contribute insightful interviews for a detailed look at the formation of the four-piece as they record their self-titled 1969 debut album and watch their careers explode. An impressive array of archive material from the late 60s and early 70s, including input from the band's late drummer John Bonham, helps fill in the story. Director Bernard MacMahon steadily tracks Zep's path to the stratosphere, though it's more good times than bad times here, with little in the way of obstacles or drama. But despite this frictionless treatment, and the film's deliberately narrow focus - finishing firmly with the completion of Led Zeppelin II, shortly after the debut - hardcore fans will surely delight in the grainy and gripping concert footage.
