Calum Baker

The fifth feature made by Iranian writer/director Jafar Panahi while banned by his government from making films or leaving the country is another puckish and powerful act of resistance. It finds Panahi, once again playing a version of himself, hiding out in a small village on Iran's border, where he uses video conference technology to remotely direct a film that's being shot in neighbouring Turkey. Posing as a photographer on holiday, he snaps a shot of a couple having a close moment - an innocuous act that leads to outsized turmoil for this strict religious community. Panahi gives a creditable performance at the head of a fine non-professional cast. He also crafts a beautifully layered screenplay that contains his trademark humour, wryly observing the absurdities of his situation and his country. But in drawing parallels between himself, the star-crossed couple he becomes entangled with, and the lovers at the heart of his film-within-the-film, the director builds a riveting and upsetting story with the escalating pace of a thriller.
