Summary
Suspense thriller starring Josh Hartnett. Doting suburban dad Cooper takes his teenage daughter to a packed-out pop concert, only to realise that the FBI has swarmed the arena in a sting operation targeting a notorious serial killer dubbed "the Butcher" - who is, in fact, Cooper. Can he get through the concert without either the feds or his daughter catching on?

This off-kilter thriller from M Night Shyamalan is easily among the writer/director's most playful offerings. Josh Hartnett stars as Cooper Adams: loving father, devoted husband and Machiavellian serial killer known as "the Butcher". The police don't know who the Butcher is, but they do have a lead on his whereabouts: a pop concert at the local arena. With the cops closing in, Cooper must escape the show without letting his "suburban dad" mask slip, so as not to arouse the suspicions of his teenage daughter (Ariel Donoghue). It's fun to watch Harnett's killer outwit and outmanoeuvre everyone around him. But such is the absurdity of the FBI's plan that it never truly feels like the noose is tightening around his neck. In truth, Trap may be a better dark comedy than it is a thriller. The real trap is for the viewer: expect a straightforward nail-biter and you may leave disappointed. Instead, try to get on Shyamalan's wavelength and consider the silliness a feature, not a flaw.
