Terry Staunton

Workaholic gallery owner Andy Goodrich (Michael Keaton) gets a rude awakening when his wife unexpectedly checks into rehab, leaving him with sole parental responsibility for the couple's nine-year-old twins in this acutely observed drama that is sweetened with a side-helping of laughs. Adapting to full-on family life while struggling to keep his failing business afloat, Goodrich also finds himself addressing past mistakes with the grownup daughter (Mila Kunis) from his first marriage, and learning from the experiences of another single father. In lesser hands this could have been a bog-standard domestic comedy, but writer/director Hallie Meyers-Shyer's portrait of a well-meaning but aloof and unengaged dad is rich in detail and makes its points with slow-burning subtlety. Keaton gives a compelling performance, whether seen as the hero or villain by those around him, and his intuitive rapport with a career-best Kunis constantly hits its mark. Heartfelt but never mawkish, it's a smart, articulate examination of family ties and the myriad knots that complicate them.
