This slick and inventive action yarn stars Bill Skarsgård as Boy, a young, deaf warrior living in a futuristic totalitarian hellhole. Years of gruelling training by a local shaman (The Raid's Yayan Ruhian) prepare Boy to take down the cruel ruling clan who killed his family, which is led by Famke Janssen's evil matriarch and her equally vile brethren (Michelle Dockery, Sharlto Copley and Brett Gellman). Despite the dark themes, this is a joyously offbeat feature debut from director Moritz Mohr. Skarsgård's hero is entertainingly off-the-wall, his hilariously snarky inner voice adopted from a childhood videogame. There are nods to genre fare like The Purge, The Hunger Games and Kill Bill, but Mohr fashions his own riotous romp full of stylish mayhem, splatstick gore and gleeful gallows humour that's worthy of producer Sam Raimi, plus some corking martial arts brawls.
