Summary

Documentary. With a combined age of over 300 years, Dames Judi Dench, Maggie Smith, Joan Plowright and Eileen Atkins have a wealth of acting experience to share as they gather for a talk about their remarkable careers and extraordinary lives. Unsurprisingly, there is much wit and wisdom on display as the quartet's observations are illustrated with clips of their most famous performances, and even as they reflect back on lives filled with drama, they are still young at heart.

Four grande dames who remain among this country's greatest stage and screen performers share a day together in this wonderful documentary. Lifelong friends Joan Plowright, Maggie Smith, Eileen Atkins and Judi Dench reminisce about their careers, the art of acting, their love lives and more. Meanwhile, director Roger Michell (Notting Hill) gently nudges the conversation in surprising directions. Behind-the-scenes banter also remains in the final cut to show just how witty these Dames can be - not to mention formidable! Gems include Smith admitting that she scared the wits out of Plowright's husband (quite a feat, considering that he was Sir Laurence Olivier), and Dench being gently ribbed for unwittingly stealing the other ladies' roles. By the time the conversation turns to old age, with Smith offering her hearing aid to Plowright, it's clear that this is a historical record of a lost era. There's no time for melancholy, though. There's far too much giggling for that.
