One of the last B-movie westerns to emerge from the Republic production company and distributor in the early 1950s, Bandits of the West is directed by Harry Keller and stars studio regular Allan Lane as Marshal "Rocky" Lane, who keeps the peace in the small Texan town of Lansdale. As so often in this genre, the story hinges on the conflict between civilisation and wilderness. A gas pipeline is being constructed that will facilitate street and indoor lighting in this growing community, but the corrupt ranchers working for their jailed boss (Trevor Bardette) are insistent that the scheme can't pass through his land. "Things aren't going to be settled by guns around here, but by the law", announces the town marshal in an early stand-off, although within the film's brisk running time there are opportunities for some efficiently executed horseback chase sequences, explosions, bar-room brawls and a climactic shoot-out at the baddies' ranch. There is little depth to the stock characters, but this still makes for entertaining viewing.
