History is supposed to be about facts, but hard truths can prove elusive when oft-repeated myths become accepted as reality. That is why Nicholas Dimitropoulos's account of the Kalavryta massacre in December 1943 has aroused such controversy. When 78 German prisoners were killed by Greek partisans, a reprisal operation saw over 400 men gunned down in cold blood, while the women and younger children were barricaded in the town school. Dimitropoulos shows an Austrian soldier opening the door of the burning building, even though his intervention is disputed by many Greek scholars, and therein lies the problem of judging a film "inspired" by events that remain so debated. In his final screen appearance, Max von Sydow is dignity personified as an anguished survivor appealing to lawyer Astrid Roos for Germany to acknowledge its guilt, but Marco Kreuzpaintner told a similar story much more effectively using the same flashback structure in The Collini Case. Those seeking a less provocative analysis should seek out Elias Yannakakis's documentary, Kalavryta: People and Shadows.
