Review
A star rating of 3 out of 5.
Dave Aldridge
Set on the photogenic Channel Island of Jersey, this atmospheric and decently played bit of rural Brit noir sees fragile and sheltered Moll (Jessie Buckley) caught between the pull of her repressively overprotective family and the sexual allure of hunky mystery man Pascal (Johnny Flynn), who may or may not be responsible for a series of brutal island murders. But does such uncertainty matter to Moll, who seems more flattered by Pascal's attention than bothered by his possible butchery? Buckley impresses as the needy, vulnerable Moll. Flynn, by comparison, is a little charisma-light and dull as her beau. But Beast is a taut, tight watch, marred only a whit by an improbable and melodramatic climax.
