Jackie Chan stars as the Robin Hood-like leader of a merry band of rebel rail workers in this blockbusting period caper. The Railroad Tigers make it their mission to disrupt the rule of their Japanese oppressors, but are inspired by an injured Chinese soldier to up their game and attempt to blow up a bridge of strategic importance. A more upbeat affair than Chan's previous collaborations with director Ding Sheng (Little Big Soldier, Police Story: Lockdown), this adventure combines CGI-enhanced thrills with Chan's trademark acrobatic spills to winning effect. Playing it for laughs sometimes dissipates the peril, but the film steams along nicely, maintaining its momentum over the two-hour running time. The feel-good factor is further enhanced by the banter between Jackie and his son Jaycee, here making his first film appearance since a highly publicised spell in prison on drugs charges. But threatening to upstage everyone is Hiroyuki Ikeuchi, who genially sends up his Ip Man persona as an increasingly maniacal enemy commander.
