This post-apocalypse sci-fi belies its meagre budget to create a grim but visually striking world of mutant flora and fauna, where the poor struggle to survive while oligarchs thrive in sealed-off cities. Following an ecological disaster, the only remaining food is one particular seed, supplies of which are controlled by the elite and which only they know how to germinate. Young peasant girl Vesper (Raffiella Chapman) is a gene-hacking genius on the verge of unlocking the seeds' secrets. However, when an oligarch's daughter crash lands nearby, Vesper has a dangerous decision to make. A Lithuanian/French/Belgian co-production, but filmed in English (with reliable Brit thesp Eddie Marsan in a support role), Vesper is an impressive and elegant-looking slice of miserabilism. Although the plot is clunky at times, and the tone a little one-note, spirited acting and quirky visuals raise it to another level, and it's packed full of playful ideas, such as Vesper's incapacitated dad communicating with her via a drone that looks like a floating head.
