This gung-ho vanity project for director/producer/star Wu Jing became the highest-grossing release ever in China, its mix of explosive action and flag-waving patriotism proving a winning box-office proposition. Western audiences haven't shared the same enthusiasm, probably because the film comes across as an overblown and humourless throwback to 1980s Rambo-style violent excess. Wu plays a former special forces soldier who becomes caught up in a rebel uprising in an unnamed African country riven by plague (all the negative stereotypes are trotted out here). As he assists Chinese aid workers and other nationals trapped by the fighting, his efforts earn him the enmity of Frank Grillo and his kill-happy band of mercenaries. The action is as gratuitous as it is ridiculous (an underwater punch-up sets the tone early on), lingering on the CGI-enhanced splatter while piling on the collateral damage. The underused Grillo does get to wipe the smirk off the face of Wu's cocky yet charmless hero in their eventual showdown, but it's small consolation in a film that signs off with the promise of a further, interminable sequel.
