This animated reboot takes the sewer-dwelling heroes in half-shells back to their roots, serving as an origin story of how the quartet came to be crime fighters extraordinaire. It sees the turtles face off against a dastardly mutant fly (voiced by Ice Cube) intent on conquering New York - and beyond. After learning of their foe's plans to concoct an airborne virus to make all wildlife willing foot soldiers in his plans to dominate humankind, the turtles spring into high-kicking action, aided by human pal and aspiring investigative journalist April (Ayo Edebiri, TV's The Bear). Director Jeff Rowe and his co-writers, including comedy mainstay Seth Rogen, acknowledge the comic-book source material, while also developing a subplot of the heroes navigating their way through more typical adolescent minefields, frequently punctuated by well-chosen pop culture references (Adele concerts, Ferris Bueller's Day Off). The animation is endlessly inventive, while the makers also take a leaf out of Pixar's book by imbuing their protagonists with substantive emotional depth and keenly observed character traits.
