The sins of a colonial past haunt the London home into which Filipina migrant Joy (Max Eigenmann) smuggles her young daughter (Jaeden Paige Boadilla), in order to take up the post of carer to the comatose Nigel Garrett (David Hayman). Joy doesn't quite agree with the way Katherine (Leanne Best) ministers to her cancer-stricken uncle. But she is too preoccupied with keeping her mischievous 10 year-old out of sight to deal with ominous warnings - until she's left alone with Nigel for four days and bitterly comes to regret ignoring her employer's advice. Despite echoes of Brontë and Poe reverberating around the creepy house with its locked doors and secrets, it's Rudyard Kipling's 1899 poem, The White Man's Burden, that allows British-born Filipino first-timer Paris Zarcilla to examine the political legacy of empire and the impact that class snobbery and racial bigotry have on the national response to the contemporary migrant crisis. Hayman is dependably despicable, but it's young Boadilla who steals the show with her effervescent innocence and talent for trouble. The denouement spills over into hoary melodrama, but this is a distinctive slice of gothic realism whose social critique is unsettlingly sharp.
