A star rating of 3 out of 5.
Jeremy Aspinall
A 300-year-old family feud takes a terrible supernatural turn in this moody British horror featuring Lon Chaney Jr. The veteran star provides a touch of bombastic menace as the patriarch of the Whitlock clan, who's bent on destroying the land-developing Laniers after their workers dig up the graveyard containing his dead brethren. However, unbeknown to construction boss Bill Lanier (played by future Colditz star Jack Hedley), the excavation also revived the sorceress buried alive by the Laniers in the 17th century, and that spells danger for his kith and kin. The opening cemetery scene when the witch emerges from her tomb conjures up memories of Mario Bava's cult chiller Black Sunday (1960) and promises much, but Chaney Jr appears rarely - and then only to bellow at folk - and Yvette Rees's creepy crone eventually finds herself playing second fiddle to a gang of hooded Satanists. It's watchable B-movie fare, though.
