Combining an intriguing sci-fi concept with a generous splattering of body horror, Brandon Cronenberg's follow-up to Possessor is once again partially indebted to the work of his father, David Cronenberg (Videodrome). Alexander Skarsgård stars as James, an unsuccessful writer whose struggle for inspiration leads him to the fictional nation of Li Tolqa. There, he and wife Em (Cleopatra Coleman) are instructed not to leave their luxury resort under any circumstances. When the alluring Gabi (Mia Goth in sensationally unrestrained form) convinces them to flout this rule, though, major repercussions follow. With kaleidoscopic visual sequences and the use of extreme close-ups, Cronenberg crafts an uneasy and offbeat atmosphere that ensures this is not always an easy watch, especially when combined with the frequent bursts of violence. But if you can get on its wavelength, Infinity Pool is another fascinatingly unusual work that poses some interesting questions about the darker side of the human psyche.
