The belated third instalment of the horror franchise sees original director Danny Boyle and screenwriter Alex Garland return to the helm for a grisly but thought-provoking twist on the post-apocalyptic premise. Mainland UK is under strict quarantine and overrun by mutated victims of the original infectious outbreak, but a young boy (Alfie Williams) and his sickly mother (Jodie Comer) are forced to return, leaving their healthy offshore communion in search of a maverick doctor (Ralph Fiennes) who may be able to cure her. It's a more reflective, human story than before, while never forgetting to satisfy the appetites of fans who may have climbed aboard primarily for the frights and gore. Williams carries the weight of the narrative on his young shoulders, and turns in an outstanding, layered performance, routinely acting his more lauded elders off the screen. Comer skilfully pulls at heartstrings, drifting in and out of lucidity while haunted by vivid memories of happier times before the outbreak, while Aaron Taylor-Johnson conveys cocksure bluster as her husband in the new make-and-mend society.
