A plucky pensioner is at the centre of this delightful comic caper from debut writer/director Josh Margolin. It tells the story of 93-year-old Thelma Post (June Squibb), a resilient, contented widow with a chequered medical history, who is fussed over by her loving family: devoted but directionless grandson Danny (Fred Hechinger), daughter Gail (Parker Posey) and son-in-law Alan (Clark Gregg). When she falls victim to a telephone scam, Thelma takes a leaf out of Tom Cruise's playbook and springs into action, tracking down the perpetrators and bringing Shaft himself (Richard Roundtree in his final film role) along for the ride, with the pair leaving a trail of panicking carers in their wake. Flanked by a propulsive and funky score, Squibb is pure joy, with her scenes alongside Hechinger a particular treat. Dedicated to Margolin's own grandmother, whose personal experience inspired the script, Thelma is warm, accomplished and extremely witty - poking affectionate fun at the ageing process and proving you're never too old to get stuck into an adventure.
