Summary
Historical drama starring Alicia Vikander and Jude Law. As the sixth wife of King Henry VIII, Katherine Parr's existence is fraught with the fear that her ailing, ageing husband could end her life at any moment. Katherine Parr, the sixth and final wife of Henry VIII, is the subject of this tense, occasionally explosive, period drama. Adapted from Elizabeth Fremantle's novel Queen's Gambit, it casts Alicia Vikander as the watchful Parr, all too aware that one false move might see her life cut short by her monstrous monarch husband. Jude Law plays the ailing king, who returns from a spell in France with his legs ravaged by painful ulcers and his volcanic temper quick to turn. With Parr suspected of harbouring radical religious views, the film posits a friendship between her and the Protestant heretic preacher Anne Askew (The Crown's Erin Doherty) - the real firebrand of the film. Simon Russell Beale and Eddie Marsan pop up as influential figures, with Brazilian director Karim Aïnouz vividly painting the Tudor court as a viper-occupied nest. While Vikander is more functional than fantastic, she - and everyone else - pales next to a terrific Law, who leaves an indelible mark as Henry.
