James Mottram

A young girl witnesses a sexual assault in this terrific, confidently directed US indie. Eight-year-old Josephine (newcomer Mason Reeves) is in San Francisco's Golden Gate Park when she spies a man raping a woman by a public washroom. The attacker is caught - but then comes the fallout. While the cops want Josephine to testify, her parents (Gemma Chan and a never-better Channing Tatum) come to blows about how to handle the situation. Worse, Josephine is haunted by thoughts of the perpetrator, barely able to comprehend the gravity of what she's seen. Writer/director Beth de Araújo does a brilliant job in putting audiences in Josephine's fragile, frightened mind, and deservedly claimed both the top awards at the Sundance film festival for her exemplary work. This is also a fascinating study of male anger, channelled through Tatum's competitive and volatile father. Beautifully measured, and featuring some really incisive montages, this is an honest, frank and engrossing character study.
