Even the most stone-hearted viewer might catch their lip wobbling during this weapons-grade tear-jerker from Belgian film-maker Lukas Dhont. It tells the story of a relationship between two 13-year-old boys, Léo (Eden Dambrine) and Rémi (Gustav De Waele), who are inseparable best friends that share an intense bond. When the pair start at a new school, though, their closeness becomes fodder for remarks from classmates, meaning they withdraw from each other, and a tragedy soon strikes that is almost too sad to bear. Dhont shoots the bucolic Belgian countryside in ravishing fashion and writes and directs with a sensitive touch, while teenagers Dambrine and de Waele are a revelation in their roles, giving nuanced performances that would be impressive for actors of any age. Although at times there is a hint of manipulation in how the film tugs on heartstrings, Close still lands a gut punch of striking force.
