Saoirse Ronan's raw performance takes us on a roller-coaster ride in this gripping portrait of addiction. Twenty-something alcoholic Rona has retreated to her family's home on Scotland's Orkney Islands in a bid to get sober. She makes tentative steps with support from her mother (Saskia Reeves) and bipolar father (Stephen Dillane), who also suffers storms of poor mental health. Meanwhile, flashbacks offer insight into Rona's volatile life in London with her long-suffering boyfriend (Paapa Essiedu). Adapting Amy Liptrot's memoir, writer/director Nora Fingscheidt offers an unflinching depiction of alcoholism that also draws on Scottish myths to lend poetry to the material. The elements play an important role in the narrative, too, with the beautiful backdrop of Orkney suggesting the prospect of hope through a re-connection with nature. A complex and immersive consideration of alcoholism that hinges on Rona's attempts to take control of her own tempestuous nature, rather than trying to jettison it altogether.
