James Mottram

This warts-and-all portrait of snooker ace Ronnie O'Sullivan was filmed in 2021 during the run-up to the tournament that could make the Essex star a seven-times world champion. Allowing a glimpse of his external pressures and internal torment, it shows O'Sullivan at his most vulnerable. A player who has quit matches in the past, as well as falling foul of the snooker authorities, "The Rocket" has a troubled relationship with the game he has dominated for years. "You fall in and out of love with snooker," he says. Celebrity friends interviewed include The Rolling Stones' Ronnie Wood and artist Damien Hirst, who admits to driving O'Sullivan to The Priory for rehab on more than one occasion. Rival players Stephen Hendry and Jimmy White also pitch up, with the former dubbing him "an artist". Director Sam Blair doesn't flinch from sensitive topics, including O'Sullivan's father doing jail time for murder, and illustrates his film with electric footage of the player doing what he does best. Fans of the game will lap this up.
