Terry Staunton

Zoe Saldaña stars as a Mexican nightclub dancer fearing for her life after killing a member of a drugs cartel in self-defence in this sombre and only partially successful drama. As she flees to hopeful safety over the border, further dangers lie in wait, and her path crosses with those of other, equally desperate illegal immigrants, including a young girl separated from her mother. Meanwhile, in the US, government agent Garrett Hedlund experiences challenges of his own, his work a steady diet of human tragedy. First-time director and co-writer Marco Perego - Saldaña's real-life husband - pivots back and forth between political thriller and morality tale without ever settling on a tone to give the narrative much-needed clarity. The script is packed with incident, but the two leads (both of whom deliver solid performances) are kept apart for the bulk of the film's running time, giving it the feel of a pilot for a story that might have had room to breathe had it been played out more leisurely across several episodes.
