Before he made his name with classy slasher Black Christmas (1974) and high-school romp Porky's (1981), Bob Clark rounded up his mates to make this low budget horror-comedy, also known as Revenge of the Living Dead. Alan Ormsby, who co-wrote the script, stars as the insufferable leader of a theatre troupe who sail to a cemetery island to enact a bizarre ritual, under duress, involving a corpse. By modern standards, it's incredibly slow going, and not especially funny or frightening. There's not a zombie in sight until the final act, and the irritating characters prove tough company. Nevertheless, this has become a cult hit mostly on the back of its impressive make-up effects (also done by Ormsby) and raucous last third. With its eerie camera work, the film does have atmosphere in spades, largely due to its graveyard, and cabin in the woods location (it's shot in Miami, Florida). A curio, then, that's worth checking out for its place in the horror pantheon, rather than entertainment value alone.
