Prepare for some deep thoughts with this one. If you figured out how to talk to aliens, would you start with "hello"? Or would you worry that they were hostile and stay silent in the hope that they'd leave us alone? This is the quandary facing Annika (Isabelle Fuhrman) and Charlie (Josh Hutcherson). They've been hired by billionaire Sam (Dennis Quaid) to help a genius with his scientific research on a private island. The problem is that the genius in question (David Thewlis) is an abusive nihilist; as he comes closer to talking with some otherworldly force, it's clear he's not the ambassador that planet Earth needs. Writer/director Jonathan Sobol has hit upon a fascinating premise, and while the film is mostly exposition, it's not too dense to follow, partly thanks to the ease of the actors' delivery. In many ways it all resembles a short story from such "hard sci-fi" icons as Arthur C Clarke or Isaac Asimov. Other cerebral sci-fi films such as Contact or Arrival may have already answered some of the questions posed here - and with a much higher budget - but this is still an intriguing contemplation.
