Summary
Biographical drama starring Kate Winslet. As the Second World War rages, American fashion model-turned-photographer Elizabeth "Lee" Miller defies the expectations of the era and travels to mainland Europe as a war correspondent for Vogue. Reporting from the frontline, Miller captures indelible images of the conflict, including the horrors found in the Nazi concentration camps at Buchenwald and Dachau.

Kate Winslet spent almost a decade developing this biographical drama about renowned photographer Lee Miller, and her admiration for the subject shines through. Opening with a glimpse of her pleasantly bohemian life in inter-war France -where she enjoyed the company of several leading surrealists - the bulk of the film's run time is concerned with Miller's pioneering work covering the Second World War. This includes her crucial documentation of the harrowing scenes at Dachau concentration camp, as well as a recreation of the iconic photograph that saw her posing in Hitler's Munich apartment bathtub. Winslet is reliably fantastic in the lead role and can count on an ace A-list supporting cast, with comedian Andy Samberg excelling in a rare dramatic role as Life magazine photographer David Scherman. But although Lee provides an engaging overview of Miller's work, its presentation is simply too conventional. First-time feature director Ellen Kuras presents her images with little flair, and the story is told in broad, often clichéd, strokes that don't penetrate particularly deeply into Miller's psyche.
