Perhaps best known for his involvement in 1969's Death of a Gunfighter, backstage wrangles over which birthed the famous industry alias "Alan Smithee", director Robert Totten proved himself a capable hand with this debut feature. Set in northern Italy during the last days of the Second World War, it follows a US Army unit sent to destroy a Nazi ammunition dump. Escaping after being ambushed on the edge of a minefield, Victor French and Louis Massad head for a remote partisan camp with displaced sisters Majel Barrett and Sandy Donigan. Much in the same mould as Stanley Kubrick's war drama Fear and Desire (1953), this is a rugged and cheaply made picture that strives for combat authenticity. The score is intrusive and the romantic undercurrent tacky. But the performances have grit and the battlefield action is effectively staged, particularly during the mountain showdown.
