Donnie Yen's time-transplanted Ming warrior returns in this shambolic follow-up to 2014's Iceman. Finding himself once again betrayed by his scheming childhood friends, Yen and his gal pal must travel back from the 21st century to his own era in an attempt to save his clan from execution. From the muddied motives of villainous Simon Yam to a superfluous pit stop on board a train in 1928, the film is an incomprehensible mess. It's bad enough that director Yip Wai Man fails to put his star to use in any decent action scenes, but he also asks too much of him in the more reflective moments, which drip with piano-swelling sentimentality. The replaying of the slaughter of Yen's loved ones also feels like a unnecessarily sadistic touch in a film that largely dispenses with the broad comedy of the original. Don't be fooled by its short running time, much like its time-bending premise, this actually feels a lot longer than it actually is.
