In this convoluted British whodunnit, Alex Nicol stars as an American journalist who is dispatched to Cranleigh Cross after a composer is shot dead at his piano during a storm. The man's uncle doesn't trust the suicide verdict, and nosy neighbour Mona Washbourne is quick to point the finger at Anne Paige, the ward of newspaper owner Colin Tapley. However, as inspector John Horsley snoops around the village, Nicol soon discovers that several people had a motive for murder. Adapted from Frank Chittenden's novel The Uninvited, this marked the directorial debut of George Pollock, who would go on to guide Margaret Rutherford through her four Miss Marple cases. However, his direction feels hesitant, and the screenplay (co-written by Norman Hudis prior to his involvement with the Carry Ons) leaves too few clues for armchair sleuths to latch on to before springing its surprise.
