Calum Baker

This beguiling, blackly comic French drama comes courtesy of writer/director Alain Guiraudie, creator of the cult erotic thriller Stranger by the Lake (2013). It follows Toulouse baker Jérémie (Félix Kysyl), who returns to his rural southern hometown for a funeral. After reuniting with the bereaved family, Jérémie ends up staying in the spare room of widow Martine (Catherine Frot), causing a dispute between him and her son (Jean-Baptiste Durand) that sharply escalates. Kysyl and Durand are excellent as the former best friends who've long since grown into very different adults, their dynamic echoing that of the leads in Claude Chabrol's classic Le Beau Serge (1958). But Guiraudie gently pushes the narrative down some fascinating, sexually fluid avenues, as a local misfit (David Ayala) and a priest (Jacques Develay) are drawn into Jérémie's ambiguous orbit. Eventually, things drift past any obvious logic, but it simply doesn't matter; Guiraudie and his top-drawer cast pull it all together with such brio that the characters' bizarre actions seem to make perfect sense. Gorgeously shot in memorable locations by Claire Mathon (Portrait of a Lady on Fire), the film smoothly blends erotic tension, musings on morality and moments of the utterly ridiculous into a subtle, dreamlike stew.
