American auteur Wes Anderson heads to the desert plains in the 1950s for his 11th feature, a typically kooky sci-fi comedy drama. The story concerns a youth astronomy convention where a meteorite once landed, and a Who's Who of Hollywood heavyweights portray the people who converge on the titular town. They include a war photographer (Jason Schwartzman) and his father-in-law (Tom Hanks), a famous actor (Scarlett Johansson), a motel manager (Steve Carell), a cowboy (Rupert Friend) and a schoolteacher (Maya Hawke). When the convention begins, an extraordinary astronomical event forces this group of eccentrics to live in the desert as a community, with predictably quirky results. For all the whimsy and whip-smart deadpan comedy, there is also a current of sadness that proves subtly affecting and harks back to previous Anderson works such as The Royal Tenenbaums. The film is unlikely to convert the director's detractors, but Asteroid City is more evidence of a director with a distinct style and total mastery of their craft.
