Terry Staunton

A mismatched buddy movie packed with gags and thrills, in which "personal security consultant" Ryan Reynolds has to deliver hired killer Samuel L Jackson to court, where the hitman is to testify against mass-murdering despot Gary Oldman. Standing in his way are countless henchmen hell-bent on assassinating the turncoat assassin, with the killer himself proving not to be the most co-operative of charges. As indicated by Oldman's hammy Eastern European accent, bad guys and authority figures are painted in predictably broad brush strokes, but Tom O'Connor's script is laugh-out-loud hilarious when it comes to the two leads' sparring. The action set pieces are endlessly inventive, most notably a lengthy chase sequence along the canals of Amsterdam and a gruesome bout of fisticuffs in a hardware store, while Salma Hayek adds to the fun as Jackson's foul-mouthed, no-nonsense jailbird wife.
