Mark Pougatch presents coverage of the first of three opening ceremonies, which comes from Mexico City Stadium ahead of the first game of the tournament, and includes performances by Colombian reggaeton star J Balvin and South African singer-songwriter Tyla. As befits a tournament in which many aspects will feel different, three host nations mean three opening ceremonies, with ones to follow in Toronto and Los Angeles tomorrow. There's also a look ahead to the competition, as well a focus on the match between Mexico and South Africa, which will be the first of 104 in a marathon event. With analysis from Ian Wright, Roy Keane and Gary Neville

Mexico v South Africa (Kick-off 8.00pm). Joanne Cantwell presents coverage of the Group A match at Mexico City Stadium, which serves as the opening game of the tournament. This is the fifth overall meeting between these nations, with the most recent also being the opening contest of the 2010 World Cup in South Africa, which ended in a 1-1 draw. That was the last time Bafana Bafana competed in a World Cup and, as with their two other tournament appearances in 1998 and 2002, they failed to progress beyond the group stage, whereas El Tricolor finished second in the group to progress to the last-16, where they were beaten 3-1 by Argentina. Last time out in Qatar they failed to progress from a group that also included Argentina, Poland and Saudi Arabia, and their best-ever performances in the 17 previous appearances saw them reach the quarter-final stage as sole hosts in both 1970 and 1986

South Korea v Czechia (Kick-off 3.00am). Laura Woods presents coverage of the Group A match at Guadalajara Stadium in Mexico. The Koreans are appearing at their 11th tournament in succession, and a 12th overall, and qualified after going unbeaten in 16 total matches across two rounds of qualifying in the Asian Confederation. Their best-ever performance at a World Cup saw them finish fourth in 2002 when they served as co-hosts alongside Japan, but since then they have failed to progress beyond the last-16, which was as far as they went four years ago in Qatar after suffering a 4-1 loss to Brazil in Doha. For Czechia, this is their first appearance at a World Cup since 2006 in Germany, and they were made to work hard for their place as they finished second in their qualifying group behind Croatia, which led to a place in the play-offs where they triumphed twice in penalty shootouts against Republic of Ireland and Denmark after both games ended in 2-2 draws. With analysis from Karen Carney and Jobi McAnuff, and commentary by Seb Hutchinson and Andros Townsend
