How did you feel when Ruth and James told you this was the end?
Well, I wasn’t even expecting this one, so I was delighted! It was just brilliant to revisit Gwen again. But this one is definitely, definitely the finale. It is the end, and it is going to happen on Christmas Day.
What makes you so sure that this is definitive?
Because it says on the front of my script “THE FINALE”! That’s why, and I believe what is written by James and Ruth. I just believe that it is definitely, definitely the last one. And I had a really, really nice line to end Gwen with – it was poignant.
Was it fun to film — or sad?
Fun. Filming in the house again – sitting on the same sofa that I sat on 17 years ago. All these great scenes came flooding back. I may work with maybe Jo again, I may work with Ruth again, or [director] Chris Gernon. But all of us will never be together again.
People get a shock when they meet me – I'm ruder than Gwen!
Is there anything you can tell us about the storyline?
No! Of course not! To be honest, I don’t think anybody really wants to know. Certainly, my friends and family have said, “No, we just want to wait until Christmas Day.” That’s part of the excitement.
Is Gwen the role that you’re most recognised for?
Absolutely, yes. I was on the other side of the world, going into a museum in Sydney, and the woman working behind the desk suddenly did a double take. But when people meet me, I think they get a shock – I’m a bit ruder than Gwen!
Is there anything you do have in common with her?
No! Apart from her love of family, I suppose. I think family is first for me as well. But that’s about it. She’s also a much better cook than me! She’s a lovely lady.
We’ve seen a West Christmas in Barry — is yours similar?

Well, I’m usually doing panto, but just like the Wests and the Shipmans, I make sure that I’m with family on Christmas Day.
