MOTD Live: FIFA World Cup 2026 | Netherlands v Sweden 20.06
2026
Sport
Netherlands v Sweden (Kick-off 6.00pm). Mark Chapman presents coverage of the Group F match at Houston Stadium in the USA. The Dutch secured their place at this World Cup by finishing top of their qualifying group ahead of Poland, Finland, Malta and Lithuania, winning six of their eight matches and drawing the other two, and scoring 27 goals in the process while conceding just four. However, they had a minor setback in their opener when they were held to a 2-2 draw by Japan. Sweden had to work much harder to qualify, eventually getting through via the play-offs, but they got off to an excellent start in these finals with an emphatic 5-1 victory over Tunisia. With analysis from Thomas Frank, Micah Richards and Ellen White

FIFA World Cup 2026 | Episode 19
2026
Sport
Germany v Ivory Coast (Kick-off 9.00pm). Coverage of the Group E match at Toronto Stadium in Canada. There has only been one previous encounter between these nations, a 2009 friendly match that ended in a 2-2 draw in Gelsenkirchen, and Les Éléphants will have to improve on their World Cup record against European opposition if they are to stand a chance of claiming a victory here. In four meetings against teams from Europe, they have a record of one win, one draw and two losses, with the sole win coming against Serbia and Montenegro at the 2006 tournament in Germany. While Die Mannschaft have a proud World Cup record overall they have failed to deliver since lifting the trophy in 2014, not even progressing beyond the group stage in both 2018 and 2022 after finishing fourth and third in the group standings respectively. Both sides got their campaigns underway with victories on the first gameday, as Germany thrashed Curacao 7-1 and Ivory Coast nicked a late 1-0 win against Ecuador

MOTD Live: FIFA World Cup 2026 | Ecuador v Curaçao
2026
Sport
Ecuador v Curaçao (Kick-off 1.00am). Coverage of the Group E match at Kansas City Stadium in the USA. Both of these teams were exemplary in qualifying for this tournament, with Ecuador only suffering two losses in their 18 matches in the CONMEBOL region as they went on to finish second in the standings, while Curaçao were undefeated in all 10 of their matches across two stages in the CONCACAF region. The team known as The Blue Wave are now one of just five Caribbean teams to compete at a World Cup finals, and coming into this staging of the competition no team from the region had progressed beyond the group stage, with Cuba having made a quarter-final appearance in 1938 when the finals only consisted of a single-elimination tournament involving 16 teams. Both countries had disappointing results in their first games of the finals, as Ecuador conceded late on to lose 1-0 to Ivory Coast, while Curacao were thrashed 7-1 by Germany in their finals debut

MOTD Live: FIFA World Cup 2026 | Tunisia v Japan
Sport
Tunisia v Japan (Kick-off 5.00am). Coverage of the Group F match at Monterrey Stadium in Mexico. Tunisia were thumped 5-1 by Sweden in their opener, while Japan played out an entertaining 2-2 against the Netherlands. This is scheduled to be the 1,000th match to take place at a World Cup finals, and the seventh meeting overall between the two nations, who were also drawn in the same group in 2002 when Samurai Blue served as co-hosts alongside South Korea. Goals from Hiroaki Morishima and former Bolton Wanderers-loanee Hidetoshi Nakata inspired the Japanese to a 2-0 win on that occasion in Osaka and helped them top the table ahead of Belgium and Russia, while also condemning the Eagles of Carthage to fourth place and an early exit. Since that time there have been four more encounters between these nations, with Japan triumphing in three of those games, including a 2-0 friendly win most recently in 2023, while the North Africans claimed a 3-0 win in the final of the 2022 Kirin Cup, which is an occasional invitation event organised and staged by Japan
