Are you a fan of the Marvel universe?

We all love superheroes, that’s the sort of point of them. We all want to imagine being a hero, and that is true of any gender or age… I’m six years old in the playground, and I’ve got my parka buttoned around my neck, and I’ve got my cape, and I’m going to go and beat up Dion Townsend because he’s upset my friend. I’m a superhero!

Although you’re playing the script supervisor in The Franchise…

Yes, and my respect for script supervisors has gone through the roof. I realised I could never, ever actually do it myself. Just in terms of the organisation, the maths and the tech, it’s such a complex job — you really are holding everything. Things move so fast, and you’re trying to keep track of the shot size, the shot number, the take the director liked, how things are going to match, plus all the actors’ continuity… it’s mind-blowing.

Did the project excite you?

Absolutely, I just thought it would be an incredible thing to work with Sam Mendes and Armando Iannucci. That was a dream. And it was exhilarating, working with incredible writers who are absolutely committed to making every scene as funny as they can. When I watched the other actors I thought, “Wow, that’s so good. That’s so slick. Such incredible subtlety and humour.” It was amazing. I hope the next job I do will be as exciting.

Would you like to be a superhero yourself?

I’d love the power of flight. And I’d love to be fighting the good fight, going out and helping people who needed rescuing.
