What’s your take on Christmas cracker jokes?
Well, without them, I wouldn’t have a career. That’s where I get my source material from. And the ones I don’t like, I sell to Chris.
Do you have a favourite?
When the kids were young, we used to play, “Can Dad guess the punchline?” My favourite one was my son going, “What’s brown and sticky?” So I said, “A stick.” And he went “No, poo!” Which he’d made up. I thought
it was quite good.
We hear you put a bet on Chris to win Strictly…
I should stop telling people this, it might look like I’m soliciting votes… But yes! Vote for Chris, please. Sean Lock was good mates with Bill Bailey and I remember him telling me he was annoyed he didn’t bet on Bill to win. I thought, I’ll remember that…
Have you been watching his progress?
Yes, he’s been great! I’d never really watched the show, but this year it took over my weekends. Whenever we’ve worked together – on this new film, Would I Lie to You? or the Baftas – he’s obsessive, like me. That’s why I knew he’d do well as a dancer, wanting to get the minutiae right. Though I feel like now, win or lose, he’s had any career boost he’s going to get. He doesn’t need it any more. It’s all about me now – and my bet.
