You were suspected of being a Traitor from the start, with one reason being your job as a doctor. Did you consider lying about your job?
I did think about picking another healthcare profession but, morally, it wasn’t the right thing to do. I should’ve said I was a full-time dad or something.
How did it feel being wrongly accused?
It felt a bit mean. I did feel really isolated at the time, which was a shame, because I wanted to play the game, but no one would let me in. But throughout the course of my career, I’ve learnt how to deal with stressful things, and sometimes people aren’t very nice. It’s always about grounding yourself and being the best kind of person you can be and enjoying the experiences you have. I wasn’t going to lose that side of me.
Did you take any of it personally?
No, it was just people struggling to adapt to the situation of the game – and it’s a really tough game to play. It tends to be more other people’s insecurities that are coming out in how they present themselves. It’s a stressful situation. And the round tables are very long, because there’s lots to unpack – the round table where I made the Harold Shipman comment lasted for two hours!
Did you enjoy briefly making the Faithful believe you were a Traitor in your leaving speech?

I went into the round table thinking I was probably going to go that day. I knew I’d pretend to be a Traitor but I needed that killer line. I looked at Joe and he’s the one who said I had a “twinkle in my eye”, which was the stupidest accusation. I did it mainly for a laugh, but afterwards I was like, “Oh, that was a nice bit of revenge, wasn’t it?”
