If the key to a bloke’s happiness is giving him a man-cave, Johnny Vegas must be euphoric, having carved out his own, very personal emporium of antiques and collectibles, all for sale.
Vegas, best known for his comic acting roles and standup, has previously explored other aspects of his life on screen, including his passion for making art and his ADHD diagnosis. For Johnny Vegas’s Little Shop of Antiques, it’s all his own stuff on show. “I’ve collected all my life,” he tells RT. “A production company came to my house, saw the eclectic nature of how I live and asked me, ‘Would you be interested in buying to sell, as a dealer, not just a collector/hoarder?”
For the first series, Vegas worked out of a pop-up shop, something he enjoyed so much he’s now embarking on creating a proper business in a trade where being a famous face apparently doesn’t make any difference. “I’m treated like a dealer,” he says. “I’m proud when I hear people say, not that it was great meeting Johnny Vegas, but it was great dealing with him.”

The production crew are in and out of the shop in Dagfields, near Nantwich in Cheshire but, for Vegas, it’s become a 24/7 enterprise, making for a space stacked high with items he’s either brought from home or spotted on his travels. I arrive determined not to part with any cash but within minutes I’m offering to buy a green sofa and end up with a vintage coaster for £10.

According to Vegas, it’s easily done. “Lots of dealers will tell you. Selling is fun, buying is more fun. I want people to come in and have a good time. I bought a giant silver shoe in Ireland, and in the shop it sold within 10 minutes. Every day is a gamble. You roll the dice and think, ‘I love that and I know somebody else will.’”
