As a comedian, how do you feel about Christmas cracker jokes?

I love a Christmas cracker joke, to be honest. And I like them around the dinner table. I just don’t like it when the Christmas cracker jokes win best joke of the Edinburgh Fringe! You look at the top ten list and go, “Surely those weren’t in any shows…”

What are your Christmas traditions?

I always stick on a Christmas film. I love them. I think my favourite is Scrooged with Bill Murray. That’s why I made this new Christmas film with Lee, Bad Tidings – it gives me a horse in the race, my own Christmas film as part of the offerings out there.

And the other thing we do is we go ice skating, just before Christmas. I know what you’re thinking – but I stand at the side, and I take photographs whenever I think my wife and daughter are going past. And then at the end my wife has to delete all the photographs of other people’s kids before anyone notices!

It’s been a crazy year for you with Strictly Come Dancing — what are you going to do this Christmas to celebrate your success?

Something like Strictly is all-consuming, so there’s always going to be a comedown. Whether you win it or go out in the quarters or week seven or whatever, it will always be deflating. So actually, it’s been nice to have
this film with Lee to look forward to. It gives me something else to focus on.

Is it true Lee put a bet on you to win Strictly?

Yeah, but he’s told everyone so now he’s worried about insider dealing. I told him, I can’t cheat to win. I could only cheat to lose – but I clearly didn’t do that. Most weeks, he’ll drop me a text on Tuesday, going, “You did good at the weekend.” He’ll take a couple of days since watching it to drop a nice message. But the week we did the samba and were at the bottom of the leaderboard, he texted me at one in the morning on Saturday worried about his bet!
